Skyler Coghlan was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome at six months old, after her first seizure at three months. Since then, she's had over 500 seizures, 100+ ambulance callouts, 50+ emergency department visits, and eight induced comas.

Her parents, Bianca and Daniel, founded Little Sky Eyes to ensure Australian families facing the extraordinary financial burden of refractory epilepsy receive the direct, practical support they need.

We support Australian families caring for children with Dravet Syndrome, rare genetic epilepsies, developmental and epileptic encephalopathy (DEE), or other eligible epilepsy-related conditions, easing the financial burden so they can focus on what matters most.

What is Dravet Syndrome?

Dravet Syndrome is a rare epilepsy caused by a mutation in the SCN1A gene. It can be inherited, or, in Skyler's case, ‘De Novo, ’ which means neither parent is a carrier; it was just unlucky. It affects 1:15,000.

This disease is retractable epilepsy; often, patients are on four or more anti-epileptic drugs with little success. Treating as only a short-term bandaid to try to gain some seizure control. 

Dravet Syndrome and similar such rare epilepsies have comorbidities of:

  • Cognitive Function and Intellectual Disability
  • Behavioural and Developmental delays
  • Movement and balance issues
  • Heightened risk of SUDEP
  • Prolonged seizures

Children affected by this disease need extra safety supports that can increase their quality of life such as:

  • Safety surround beds
  • Strollers for a growing child (who has outgrown their pram)
  • Home oxygen generators
  • Home assistive technology; Pulse oximeters
  • Seizure Monitors
